A loose cover becomes a projectile in 50-plus mph winds, and a non-breathable cover traps moisture that encourages corrosion once the storm passes. Remove any cover before attempting to restart the unit.
After the Storm: How to Safely Bring Systems Back Online
The most dangerous mistake in post-storm recovery is restarting a unit that was submerged or flooded. Water-saturated electrical components (including the compressor windings, contactors, and control boards) create electrocution and fire risk the moment current passes through them. If the condenser was flooded, keep the breaker off and call a licensed technician before doing anything else.
Inspect Before You Restart
Walk around the outdoor condenser and look for visible physical damage: bent or crushed copper refrigerant lines, debris packed into the coil fins, and any displacement of the unit from its pad. Also clear the condensate drain line before the first restart. After extended power outages, drain lines commonly develop algae clogs or debris blockages that cause water to back up into the air handler and drip into the ceiling or walls on the first full cycle.
Document Before & After
Photograph your condenser unit, air handler, and electrical panel before the storm and again immediately after. Capture the data plates showing model and serial numbers on every unit. Insurance adjusters determine settlement amounts in part by distinguishing pre-existing wear from storm damage, and photographs taken at both points eliminate that ambiguity. This step takes less than five minutes and can protect thousands of dollars in claim value.
Signs You Need a Professional Inspection Before Restarting
Some post-storm conditions call for a licensed technician, not a DIY restart. Don’t attempt to restore the system yourself if any of the following apply.
- The unit was flooded at any water depth, even briefly
- Breakers trip immediately when you attempt to restore power
- There is a burning smell or visible scorching on electrical components
- The system runs but won’t cool after power is fully restored
- Refrigerant lines are bent or the unit shifted on its pad
